Hilfiger's brand and integrity both took a hit after a rumor surfaced in the mid '90s that he didn't approve of minorities wearing his clothes. Around a decade after it came to light, Hilfiger appeared on Oprah in 2007 to dispel the rumor.
During a recent appearance on the Wendy Williams Show to promote his memoir American Dreamer, Hilfiger reflected on the rumor and how it impacted his life.
Hilfiger also touched on how he took $150 and turned it into a prosperous lifestyle brand; the role hip-hop played in his brand's success; and helping the likes of Russell Simmons and P. Diddy start their own clothing lines.
